Zespół został założony w roku 1985, przez czterech kolegów z Krefeld. Nazwali go Lucifer's Heritage. Grupa wypuściła dwa dema. Pierwsze nie było niczym specjalnym, a zwało się Symphonies of Doom(1985). Drugie, czyli Battalions of Fear(86) okazało się bardziej dojrzałe. Po wydaniu tego dema zespół zmienił nazwę na obecną, czyli Blind Guardian.
